On the Nature of Photospheric Oscillations in Strong X–ray Bursts

چکیده
A possible sound origin for the photospheric oscillations in the X–ray bursting sources 1608-522 and 2127+119 is suggested. It is shown that standing sound waves in an expanding spherical envelope can have periods very close to the observed ones. The quite large ratio, ∼ 10, of the periods in the two sources is explained in terms of different wave regimes. The relevance of sound oscillations to the observed QPO in type II bursts of the Rapid Burster is also discussed. Millisecond Oscillations and Photospheric Radius Expansion in Thermonuclear X-ray Bursts
We use archival data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer to examine 125 type I X-ray bursts from the 9 weakly magnetic accreting neutron stars where millisecond oscillations have been detected during some bursts. We find that oscillations from the 6 “fast” (≃ 600 Hz) sources are almost always observed during radius expansion bursts, whereas oscillations from the 3 “slow” (≃ 300 Hz) sources are...
متن کاملThe Effect of Neutron Star Rotation on the Properties of Thermonuclear X-ray Bursts
Using observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, we previously showed that millisecond oscillations occur preferentially in thermonuclear X-ray bursts with photospheric radius expansion from sources rotating near 600 Hz, while they occur with equal likelihood in X-ray bursts with and without radius expansion for sources rotating near 300 Hz. In this paper, we use a larger sample of data...
متن کاملRXTE Discovery of Coherent Millisecond Pulsations during an X-ray Burst from KS 1731-260
A highly coherent 523.92± 0.05 Hz periodic X-ray signal has been observed during a type I X-ray burst from the low-mass X-ray binary system KS 1731-260 with the PCA on RXTE. The spectral evolution of the burst indicates photospheric-radius expansion and contraction. The 524 Hz signal occurred at the end of the contraction phase, lasted for ∼2 s, was highly coherent (Q ∼> 900), and had a pulse f...
متن کاملThe Latitude of Type I X-ray Burst Ignition on Rapidly Rotating Neutron Stars
We investigate the latitude at which type I X-ray bursts are ignited on rapidly rotating accreting neutron stars. We find that, for a wide range of accretion rates Ṁ, ignition occurs preferentially at the equator, in accord with the work of Spitkovsky et al. However, for a range of Ṁ below the critical Ṁ above which bursts cease, ignition occurs preferentially at higher latitudes. The range of ...
متن کاملThermonuclear (type-i) X-ray Bursts Observed by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer
We have assembled a sample of 1187 thermonuclear (type-I) X-ray bursts from observations of 48 accreting neutron stars by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, spanning more than ten years. The sample contains examples of two of the three theoretical ignition regimes (confirmed via comparisons with numerical models) and likely examples of the third. We present a detailed analysis of the variation of...
